God Lovingly Thinks of You

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

I remember the first time I saw love with my eyes, held it in my arms, heard its cry, and smelled its wonder. It was the day my eldest niece was born.

After my sister endured a harrowing eighteen hours of labor, she was whisked away for surgery where this bundle of joy made an appearance into the world. And I will never forget that day.

My niece came adorned with a crown full of brown hair as soft as lamb’s wool that I gently caressed with my fingers. As I held her closely, I inspected every appendage and whispered, “I love you” to her again and again.

I wanted her to know she had an aunt who would love her forever. Thankfully, my sister and her husband allowed me to be the doting aunt I longed to be.

When we determine God’s goodness by how good our circumstances are, we can end up believing God isn’t good. When we measure God’s faithfulness based on the disappointments we’ve experienced, we can question God’s faithfulness. 

And when we equate God’s love with how trouble-free our lives are, we can imagine God doesn’t love us.

The good news is that the Lord’s goodness, faithfulness, and love are not dependent on our circumstances––and cannot be defined by this earthly life. It’s simple truth we can––and must––cling to in the good and hard times.

Rejection is hard to endure.

Standing on the playground, I drew swirly patterns in the dirt with my foot, carefully avoiding eye contact with my classmates. It was the same scene, year after year. Because my athletic skills were non-existent, I was among the last to be selected for their softballs teams, and it was painful to be overlooked time and time again.

Although I waited in the dirt many years ago, rejection has cycled in and out of my life.
