God Really is Good "All the Time"
/When we determine God’s goodness by how good our circumstances are, we can end up believing God isn’t good. When we measure God’s faithfulness based on the disappointments we’ve experienced, we can question God’s faithfulness.
And when we equate God’s love with how trouble-free our lives are, we can imagine God doesn’t love us.
The good news is that the Lord’s goodness, faithfulness, and love are not dependent on our circumstances––and cannot be defined by this earthly life. It’s simple truth we can––and must––cling to in the good and hard times.
If you’re struggling to hold on to this truth, here are 10 passages of Scripture to read, meditate on, and memorize:
Exodus 34:6 ESV: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
1 Chronicles 16:34: “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”
Psalm 84:11: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
Psalm 107:8-9: “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
Psalm 119:68: “You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.”
Psalm 136:26: “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
Psalm 145:9: “The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”
Nahum 1:7: “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”
Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Friend, we all endure hardship and trouble. But our trials do not define God’s character. Remember this: the Lord’s goodness, faithfulness, and love are steadfast, sure, and certain. Grab hold of this truth and never let go!
