Anchored in the Names of God || Part 4

Today, we are wrapping up the series on the names of God. I pray that your heart, like mine, is securely anchored to our Lord and Savior as we become more intimately acquainted with Him.

Although we have not exhausted the list of names for God found in Scripture, this series has reminded me that no matter the circumstance or need that I have, our Father is in it, working through it, and supplying it. I pray that discovering His names does the same for you.

Alpha & Omega: The Beginning and the End

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says

the Lord God, “who is and who was and

who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelations 1:8 ESV

Jesus reveals Himself as Alpha and Omega in the last book of the Bible––Revelations. In the Greek language, Alpha is the first letter of the alphabet and Omega is the last. In other words: Jesus is A to Z. The beginning and the end to all things is He!

Jesus’ eternal presence is with us in every situation we face, and nothing lies outside His hand. And just as He was present at the beginning of the world, He will be present at its ending. It blesses my heart to know that in long seasons of suffering and pain, Jesus knows the beginning and ordains an ending.

Jesus––my Alpha and Omega––thank You for being the beginning and ending of all things. I trust You are with me in my current suffering and that You will bring about a glorious end to the pain I feel. Fill me with peace as I rest in Your presence.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Messiah: Christ the Anointed One

For unto you is born this day in the city of David

a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:11 ESV

The good news of Jesus’ birth was first announced to lowly shepherds as the angel defines Him as “Christ the Lord.” And “Christ” is a familiar title we use to refer to Jesus, meaning “anointed One.” In the Old Testament, God promised that one day a King would come who would put an end to their troubles and the troubles of the world. Jesus, Our Lord––the anointed redeemer––came to fulfill that long awaited promise. He supremely fulfilled His mission by laying down His life on the cross, rising again, and defeating death, hell, and the grave.

Though it cost Jesus everything, salvation is a free gift to us. And if we have accepted this gift then we have Christ and His power living inside of us. It’s easy to get so caught up in the hardships in life that we forget that––through Christ––because He is victorious, so are we!

Jesus Christ, thank You for fulfilling the promise of Messiah––the anointed One. You are the King of Kings and Lord of all my troubles. Help me to trust that one day all of my heartaches will end as You welcome me into Your presence. Until that day, give me faith to walk in victory as I live out Your will for my life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Jesus: Yahweh Saves

She will bear a son, and you shall call

his name Jesus, for he will save his

people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21 ESV

After learning of Mary’s pregnancy, Joseph contemplated ending their engagement. According to their custom, if he chose to fulfill his commitment to Mary and proceed to marry her, he would suffer dishonor and join her in shame. Yet an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him Mary was carrying a son––fathered by the Holy Spirit––and that Joseph was to accept his role in the plan of redemption and call the child Jesus––the Savior.

Every person who has ever lived, or will live, is in need of a Savior. The first sin that occurred in the Garden of Eden separated the human race from God the Father. Thankfully, He immediately made a plan for salvation. Jesus becoming flesh Himself and paying the cost for our sins fulfills the plan and extends the free gift of salvation to all. O what a Savior!

Jesus, my Savior, thank You for Your love and willingness to die in my place. I’m grateful for Your saving power that has forgiven my sins. Help me to continue to humble myself before You and honor this blessed gift that You have extended to me.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Immanuel: God With Us

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us).

Matthew 1:23 ESV

In the angel’s declaration to Joseph that Mary indeed was carrying the Christ-child in her womb, he recited the prophetic words found in the book of Isaiah: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (vs. 7:14).” Jesus’ coming to earth in the form of God and man was the fulfillment of that Old Testament promise. And in His coming, Jesus––King of Kings––chose to leave His throne in heaven to experience earthly trials of pain, heartache, suffering, and death so that the gap between humanity would dissolve. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).

Jesus promises: “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 NKJV). This is a promise that has echoed through my mind in my hardest seasons. There is nothing like knowing that the presence of Jesus is with us in every circumstance. May we ever be grateful that He is a God who came to us when we could not go to Him.

Jesus––my Immanuel––thank You for Your presence on the good and bad days. Sometimes it is difficult to feel You near me, but I choose to trust the truth of Your Word that You will always be with me and never leave me. In this, I will have hope. Fill me with peace and joy as I hold on to You.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Thank you for joining me in this series. I’d love to know if there’s a particular name of God that stands out to you. Is there a specific name that you are clinging to right now? Please share in the comments.

For me, I struggle to pick only one. Jehovah-Jireh––My Provider––encompasses all my needs (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) and desires. It reminds me that whatever is best for me, My Provider will supply it. And I can rest in Him.

Yet Immanuel––My God with me––fills my heart with peace, hope, and comfort. Because of Jesus, I will never live one moment alone. I am ever grateful for His presence!
